Two Patients Airlifted to Trauma Center After Motorcycle Crash – Now Fatal

UPDATE 10/14/2018, 11:08 A.M. – The Florida Highway Patrol has identified the deceased as 65-year-old William Richard Penning of Homosassa. The passenger, 64-year-old Joyce Ann Keller, also of Homosassa, remains in critical condition.

UPDATE 10/14/2018, 12:46 A.M. – The Florida Highway Patrol is now reporting at least one fatality.

According to officials, a Harley Davidson motorcycle occupied by a 65-year-old male driver and an unknown age female passenger was traveling eastbound on Cortez Blvd, approaching Cobb Road. 74-year-old Thomas Schilk was traveling westbound on Jefferson Street (Cortez Blvd) approaching the same intersection in a Chevy Cruze. Officials say the driver of the motorcycle turned left under a red light and was struck by Schilk’s vehicle. Both occupants suffered critical injuries and were airlifted to Bayonet Point Hospital, where the male driver later died. The female passenger remains in critical condition.

Schilk was not injured in the crash.

BROOKSVILLE – At least two people suffered serious injuries in a two-vehicle crash involving a motorcycle at Cobb Road and Cortez Blvd.

There are unconfirmed reports that one of the occupants suffered a possible leg amputation in the crash. Both victims were airlifted to a nearby trauma center for treatment.

The cause of the crash is under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol.

There is still some road blockage at the intersection at this time.

  • I was two blocks from the accident, and heard the impact, then 6 to 8 seconds of brakes squealing. There was no audible braking before the impact.

  • Prayers for all involved. Lately I have seen more and more people on motorcycles racing through the Community than ever. There is one guy in particular that races down Mariner and 50 and he goes so fast that his t-shirt that he’s wearing blows up on his back all the way to his neck….AND NO HELMET.

  • This doesn’t make sense . I was on Cobb when it happened in front of my car at the light the motorcycle had not even made it to the intersection before being hit by the car . The riders were thrown towards the intersection . My heart and my 10 yr old daughters was aching for those people and their families . So very sad.
