  • Prayers to all her family and friends, very sad I don’t think there needs to be lectures on age and driving, no one knows what happened , maybe she just passed away while driving and that could happen to the young or elderly Thank you, just my opinion.

  • Sad indeed she lost her life, however it’s sheer luck that no one else was involved or injured.

While it may not be pleasant to hear, it’s a simple reality that aging affects people in different way. Between diminished vision and peripheral vision issues, delayed reaction times and cognitive issues; perhaps there needs to be a serious discussion about implementing changes in obtaining and retaining a drivers license for drivers after the age of 70.

Medical issues could happen to almost anyone at any age. However as a person ages the likelihood of the experiencing health changes that could and do affect their ability to safely handle a motor vehicle, also significantly increases.

Personally I would do care if it’s a 20-something person texting or under the influence of illegal drugs or alcohol or a 70 or 80-something person with impaired cognitive or vision issues or impaired due to prescription medications. Both have the potential of placing others on the road, at risk.

No one wants to have their freedoms restricted, but driving is a privilege, not a right. There are sound reasons why a driver license is not issued to a 12 year old, despite their vision, reaction times and motor skills being very high. They generally lack the maturity to handle the privilege and responsibility of driving. A similar situation exists for those with medical conditions that affect their abilities and those who are in their 70’s, 80’s, even 90’s. While they may have decades life and driving experience, if they were honest with themselves, they would admit that they’re not as capable now of assorted things, as they were 30 or 40 years prior.

Perhaps it’s time to consider mandatory physical exam and basic cognitive testing, along with vision testing and a behind the wheel driving test, for all persons 70 years or older And also require that they notify the DMV whenever they experience health issues such as a stroke, TIA’s, among other things, which would affect their ability to safely handle a motor vehicle.

  • She went right through a stop sign right in front of me and an oncoming car on pinehurst by cobblestone around 1:15. I almost hit her. Then I noticed her in my rear view mirror driving half the car off of the road, and looked like she took out a mailbox and a couple trash cans. I turned around to see if I could catch up to her, but she was gone. Figured something was wrong because she looked like a elderly lady and it seemed a little early to be a drunk driver. Very sad tragedy.
