Week 8: Central and Crystal River Hunt For A Playoff Berth
Week eight is upon us as in the home stretch for the high school football season. Teams are jockeying for playoff position and a critical contest in Class 5A, District 7 pits two teams tied for second place and a playoff spot.
Joining me as always is Derek J. LaRiviere, and we will be breaking down the week eight slate, which will see a district matchup with playoff implications.
Game of the Week: Central (4-2, 3-1 5A-7) at Crystal River (3-3, 3-1 5A-7), 7:30 p.m.
Aiello Jr: Central 42-28
LaRiviere: Central, 48-21
Derek’s Breakdown: With Izzy Zena under center, Central RB De’Vonta Smith has had the freedom to unleash all of his focus into what he does best: running the football. The results have been obvious as he threatens both school and county records with his numbers. Crystal River, despite some good luck and gritty play against the other district foes, has not shown the ability to stop the run that it would take to contain someone as dynamic as Smith. Expect this one to be well in hand for the Bears by halftime.
Danny’s Breakdown: Both Central and Crystal River come into this game in a tie for second, sitting at 3-1 in Class 5A, District 7 play. The winner will have an inside track to the second playoff spot, and De’Vonta Smith has played like a man possessed since the calendar flipped into district play. The Bears will have too much offense for the Pirates, and Smith will score at least four more times as Central continues their hot streak.
Byes: Citrus (2-4), Zephyrhills Christian Academy (5-1)
OVERALL RECORDS (LAST WEEK) : Aiello Jr: 10-1 (56-22), LaRiviere 10-1 (59-19)
