Weeki Wachee drops opener to Crystal River

Coming off a Regional Playoff berth and district runner-up title, coach Kelly Werkmeister and the Weeki Wachee Lady Hornets hit the hardwood last night to start their 2015 volleyball campaign.

The Hornets were defeated by Crystal River in four sets, winning the first one 25-15, before dropping the next three 29-27, 26-24 and 25-23.

Sarah Asbury shined for Weeki Wachee recording 27 assists, eight kills and three aces, while All-Tampa Bay honorable mention Miranda Werkmeister tallied four assists, 19 digs and 18 kills.

Senior Libero Zoe Murchio was all over the floor to kick off her senior campaign, recording 28 digs to go along with five service aces.

Despite the departure of five key seniors last season, the Hornets will be led by the Junior Werkmeister as well as Seniors Murchio, Katelyn Nelson and Morgan Hnatiuk.

The schedule doesn’t get any easier for the Weeki Wachee, however, as they look towards a rematch of last year’s district championship game as they host the Hernando Lady Leopards Wednesday at 7pm.
