Weeki Wachee Wins Regional Quarterfinal

The Weeki Wachee Lady Hornets finally have a postseason win. After going 0-2 in their first two appearances, the third time was a charm.

Weeki Wachee (22-7) dropped visiting Fivay (16-10) in three sets, winning 25-13, 25-23 and 25-22.

Morgan Hnatiuk led with a team-high 13 kills, and Katelyn Nelson had a 10-0 run to open up game one for the Hornets.

Coach Kelly Werkmeister praised the efforts of her seniors, namely Hnatiuk, Zoe Murchio and Nelson for their energy all game.

“They don’t want (the season) to be over.” Werkmeister said.

The emergence of the senior class allowed junior Miranda Werkmeister to be that more effective Tuesday, as the Falcons couldn’t shadow her because of the threat to be beat by any of the Weeki Wachee hitters.

The Lady Hornets, advancing to the 5A Regional Semifinal will host Ridgewood Saturday at 2pm.
