Woman Arrested After Claiming Years of Domestic Abuse

SPRING HILL – High profile domestic violence cases are often thrust to the forefront of the national media, usually resulting apologies and multimillion dollar Public Service Announcements, by organizations like the National Football League. What isn’t as widely publicized is the number of false allegations of domestic violence, which actually outweighs the number real cases 5:1, according to a 2011 Florida Senate Interim Report.

One local man knows all too well how it feels to be falsely accused of domestic violence, but thanks to the keen sense of investigators, his accuser and long-time girlfriend, now faces charges for lying.

According to officials, 20-year-old Catherine Cabrera, contacted the Sheriff’s Office on New Year’s Day, to report that her boyfriend had battered her for several years. Cabrera provided a two page written statement to authorities, detailing how he physically abused her. Yesterday, Cabrera returned to the Sheriff’s Office and admitted that she lied about the charges and apologized for her actions.

Cabrera was taken into custody and charged with Filing a False Report to Law Enforcement. She was released today on a $1,000.00 bond.

According to the Hernando County Clerk of Court’s website, a Catherine Cabrera was charged last June for the same crime, but that case was resolved with a pretrial intervention program. PTI, as it is known, allows for the dissolution of a charge, after completion of the set terms. That case was resolved in November of last year. We cannot confirm if that is the same Catherine Cabrera as the one facing charges today.

The identity of the victim has not been released by officials.

UPDATE: According a representative with Professional Probation Services, the Catherine Cabrera charged last year for filing a false report is the same Cabrera arrested yesterday on the same charge. It has also been confirmed that the new charge will violate the terms of her Pretrial Intervention Program, from the previous charge.
