Woman Leads Deputies on 4 mph Chase After Leaving Scene of Accident
BROOKSVILLE – Just before 8:30 p.m. Fire Rescue responded to a two vehicle accident at Cortez Blvd, under the Suncoast Parkway overpass. While Sheriff’s Deputies were en route, one of the drivers fled the scene eastbound on Cortez Blvd. Deputies caught up with the vehicle as it approached the Cobb Road intersection, where they tried to conduct a traffic stop. The driver of the vehicle refused to stop and continued driving through the intersection at approximately 4 mph. Moments later the driver accelerated to speeds of 35 to 40 mph, forcing deputies to terminate the pursuit, per agency policy. Observing from a distance, deputies watched as the driver entered a ditch, regained control, and then crossed over into oncoming traffic. Fearing that the driver would place innocent people in jeopardy, a K9 deputy drove his SUV ahead of the suspect vehicle – allowing her to ram the rear of his vehicle. The tactic was successful and the suspect vehicle came to stop just east of Ponce De Leon Blvd.
The female driver, who appeared to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol, was taken into custody. After a brief examination at the scene, the suspect was transported to a local hospital for treatment. A medical episode has not been ruled out, according to our sources.
Although there were injuries associated with the original accident, those occupants refused to be transported for treatment.
The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating what led to the incident.
