Woman Still Critical After Brutal Pit Bull Attack, Doctors Couldn’t Save Her Leg

BROOKSVILLE – The young woman nearly killed by her own Pit Bull on Thursday remains in critical condition, according to family. Sadly, doctors were unable to save 20-year-old Jessica Calhoun’s leg, despite all their efforts. CLICK HERE FOR ORIGINAL STORY

Jessica Marie wrote on a Gofundme Page, “. . . She needs all of our help as she was brutally attacked by her family dog on Thursday morning, resulting in life threatening injuries. Jessica has gone through two major surgeries thus far and is still on a ventilator and fighting to get better every day. She remains in critical condition, having suffered severe trauma to both legs,” says Jessica. “Doctors had no choice but to amputate the leg above the knee,” she goes on to report.

Jessica works at Brooksville’s historical Coney Island Restaurant and has been there for 14 years, according to her mother.

Calhoun has no medical insurance, so a Gofundme page has been established by the family to help with the overwhelming medical cost.

CORRECTION: 2/26/2018, 12:51 P.M. – The Citrus County Sheriff’s Office errantly reported the victim’s age as 20. According Larry Williams, Jessica Calhoun is actually 30-year-old.

So if you are trying to create submission in a fighting breed, it’s not going to happen. They would rather die than surrender. If you add pain, it only infuriates them… to them pain is that adrenaline rush, they are looking forward to that, they are addicted to it…

  • “The American Pit Bull Terrier has been “selectively” bred for hundreds of years to fight other dogs. This is the sad “work” these dogs were created for. In the same way that Labradors were bred to retrieve birds, APBT’s were bred to face other dogs in mortal combat. Even in dogs that are not recently bred from fighting lines, the urge to rumble can arise at any time. Not to strongly emphasize this fact is to be negligent. We would be equally negligent if we were placing Beagles and failed to educate the adopter about why the specific traits that scent oriented dogs, hunting dogs, bred to work in packs, present certain challenges to those who wish to obedience train their hound.“ tia torres , villalobos rescue center, pit adoption, pitbull facts

    • “Pit bull is the common name for a type of dog. Formal breeds often considered in North America to be of the pit bull type include the American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, American Bully, and Staffordshire Bull Terrier.[1][2] The American Bulldog is also sometimes included. Many of these breeds were originally developed as FIGHTING DOGS from cross breeding bull-baiting dogs (used to hold the faces and heads of larger animals such as bulls) and terriers. After the use of dogs in blood sports was banned, such dogs were used as catch dogs in the United States for semi-wild cattle and hogs, to hunt and drive livestock, and as family companions.[3] Despite dog fighting now being illegal in the United States, it still exists as an underground activity, and pit bulls are a common breed of choice“

    • A dog (Olde English Bulldog) that looked much like today’s American Bulldog was originally used in the 1800’s in the British Isles to ‘bait’ bulls. These matches were held for the entertainment of the struggling classes; a source of relief from the tedium of hardship. In 1835 bull baiting was deemed inhumane and became illegal, and DOG FIGHTING became a popular replacement. Soon, a new bulldog was created by crossing the Olde English Bulldog with terriers to create smaller, more agile dogs. The best fighters were celebrated and held up as heroes for their courage and fortitude during battle.

      Wednesday, 28 February 2018, 1:30 am
    • Today’s pit bull is a descendant of the original English bull-baiting dog—a dog that was bred to bite and hold bulls, bears and other large animals around the face and head. When baiting large animals was outlawed in the 1800s, people turned instead to fighting their dogs against each other. These larger, slower bull-baiting dogs were crossed with smaller, quicker terriers to produce a more agile and athletic dog for fighting other dogs.

Some pit bulls were selected and bred for their fighting ability. That means that they may be more likely than other breeds to fight with dogs.

  • It’s a terrible thing to have happened. However, she knowingly brought pit bulls into her home so, there was always a chance of this happening. I’m grateful that it wasn’t a child, an innocent citizen or someone’s beloved pet who paid the price because this woman made a poor choice. Tragic attacks like this happen every day and as much as the pit bull nutters try to cover it up, it’s almost always a pit bull or a pit cross involved. When will people learn that these animals are not suitable house pets?

  • Where were you all at to protect the kids that are trying to make a stand for school shootings? Where are those pics at Tom? So everyone can see the reality and all they want is to stay safe. I like 95% of your stuff you post. But really to do this and post a pic of the women to cause more drama and hate towards a breed of a dog. Where is the real news and updates. It’s a damn good thing she didn’t get rid of this dog when she had tried to as it could have killed someone else who only wanted to help the dog. Clearly she knew something was wrong and her boyfriend knew as well. This dog should have been put down when they knew something was wrong and saw the signs. I hope she pulls through. Maybe if ppl started to see pics of children in a hospital holding on for life after they were shot in school. More ppl would stick up for our kids to help have things change all around. I don’t mean take guns away. They could change things for certain dog owners too. It’s sad EVERYONE is pointing fingers but no one is doing anything to have things changed. Well besides the kids of Parkland.

  • terrible reading this..some details missing i think..she was just standing there at home when her dog walked up to her as he was passing thru and friggin lost his s..t and almost bit off her legs and practically ended her life? wth?! im sorry i dont buy that..there has to be more to it than not saying pitbulls dont attack people etc..but when they do as with any aggressive dog there is always a catalyst of some kind..i was attacked on multiple occasions by my rotty.the reason was pitbull went after him on sight and tried killing him.i interfered by attempting to seperate them and got a little carried away and got bitten each time..i should mention tje pitbull actually saved me once when the rott went for my face..point is there has to be more to this story than what was reported they usually dont bite people as they were bred to bite other dogs and bigger game. they were also bred to be nanny dogs and babsit kids..idk.hope she recovers to the fullest possible level .hope i didnt come off insensitive or mean..i was just curious why a young dog would just attack its owner for mo reason …very tragic event.

      • So, where is the oldest known reference to the Staffie Bull being some sort of nanny dog? In a New York Times article. In 1971, Walter R. Fletcher wrote an article entitled, “A Breed That Came Up the Hard Way” in which he interviewed William R. Daniels and Mrs. Lilian Rant, President and magazine editor for the Staffordshire Bull Terrier Club of America on the eve of the Staffie Bull’s being granted permission to be shown in the American Kennel Club’s miscellaneous class. It’s the first step to AKC recognition and the club wanted to polish their dog’s image.
Daniels brings up Dickens’ villainous Bull’s-Eye again and Mrs. Rant acknowledges that the Stafford “had an unsavory reputation for fighting and violence and his name became associated with ruffians, who cared little for him as a dog but only for his ability in the pit. The Stafford we know today quickly becomes a member of the family circle. He loves children and is often referred to as a ‘nursemaid dog.'”

Well, there it is. Mrs. Rant, lover and promoter of the Stafford, is clearly speaking in the present tense about the dog of today (1971) currently being referred to as a ‘nursemaid dog’ in the United States.

It’s Dog Bite Prevention Week. Did you know that there was never such thing as a ‘Nanny’s Dog’? This term was a recent invention created to describe the myriad of vintage photos of children enjoying their family pit bulls. While the intention behind the term was innocent, using it may mislead parents into being careless with their children around their family dog – A recipe for dog bites!

        Wednesday, 28 February 2018, 1:54 am
      • “A timeline search does not turn up a mention of the exact term “nanny dog” until 1987 in an archived Toronto Star article entitled, Move to Outlaw Pit Bulls Under Study in Several Cities.

“Breeder Kathy Thomas, president of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier Association said, ‘We’re aware of the fighting – there’s a lot of it in the Hamilton area. We only sell to family homes.'”

“Thomas, mother of two young children, said her eight Staffordshires are ‘wonderful with children. In England, our Staffies were called the nanny-dog because they were gentle with kids.'”

Here’s where the lie begins to get twisted into its most bizarre and current form and the Nanny Dog myth jumps on the crazy train. The Nanny Dog argument is no longer valid in the way that Mrs. Rant used it in 1971 when the general public was not aware of contemporary dog fighting. By the 1980s, dog fighting had become a generally recognized problem and initiatives to ban pit bulls were beginning. Kathy Thomas acknowledges that there is dog fighting going on all around her in 1987 near Toronto. She can no longer say that the Staffie was once, long ago, in Dickensian England a fighting dog, but has been transformed by many years of selective breeding to be a gentle nanny dog. The dogs are fighting all around her. So, the lie becomes that Staffordshire Bull Terriers were ALWAYS known as nanny dogs. They snuggled with the babies by day, ripped out throats and gutted each other by night and, returning from the fight, snuggled once again with the baby in the pram, this time ripped to shreds and soaked in blood.“

        The Myth:
To explain vintage black and white photographs that depicted children and pit bulls together, a story was created that back in the Victorian age the pit bull was the “nanny dog”. These so-called nanny dogs were said to be so good with children parents relied on them to babysit and protect them.

        The Reality:
One fighting breed advocate created this “legend” in 1971 to distance her breed from its fighting origins. This mention was picked up by a newspaper in 1987 and has since been promoted as historical “fact.”

At no point in history were pit bulls ever “nanny dogs”. There has not been any proof ever given to make this myth a reality. The pit bull advocacy group “BADRAP” (Bay Area Dog Lovers Responsible About Pit Bulls) recently admitted that pit bulls were never nanny dogs and that this myth was dangerous to children. The retraction of the “nanny dog myth” has been highly publicized. Despite the retraction, the myth has lived on and pit bull advocates still repeat it regularly
