De’Vonta Smith rushed for 188 yards and three touchdowns, but his two fumbles were critical as Central dropped their season opener to county-rival Springstead 42-21 Friday.

Jordan Wright scored four times for the Eagles, but it was Demetrius Berry who burst on the scene with 28 carries for 168  yards.

After a scoreless first quarter, Randy Morgan put the visiting Eagles (1-0) on the board first with a 38-yard touchdown run, but Smith answered almost instantly.

The favorite for Player of the Year went 65-yards to the end zone, putting the Bears (0-1) up 7-6, as they looked to win the county matchup for two straight seasons.

Wright scored on a 4-yard run to put the Eagles back on top and after a Smith fumble on a punt, the quarterback found Jon Chase for a 4-yard score to give the Eagles what they thought was a comfortable 21-7 margin at the half.

The third quarter showed the fight in the Bears that coach Chris Sands talked about as his squad came out and tied the game behind the legs of Smith.

After scoring on runs of 1 and 13 yards, Smith and Central entered the 4th quarter tied at 21 with Springstead.

However, there would be no comeback in the cards Friday as Wright scored two touchdowns (6 and 9 yards) and Nathan Sims chipped in a score from 29-yards to seal the victory for the Eagles.

Wright, who was harsh on his sloppy performance in the preseason game, said coming out strong in week one was a goal of his.

“I played this game for God and My Grandfather,” Wright said. “Our goal is to go 1-0 every week and we need to keep that goal.”

Central had a hard time generating offense from the quarterback position as Izzy Zena and Sam Garner went 2-of-10 for 14 yards through the air, while rotating trying to find a rhythm.

For Springstead, Wright went 2-of-5 through the air for 15 yards and a score, but used his legs to score three times on 12 carries while gaining 45 yards.

The Eagles will travel to Hernando (1-0) Friday for a county clash of unbeaten teams, while Central will travel to Ridgewood (1-0) and look to knock off the high-powered Rams. Both kickoffs are slated for 7:30 p.m.
