Firefighters Battling Large Brush Fire Near Cemex Plant

BROOKSVILLE – Hernando County Fire Rescue and the Division of Forestry are en route to a very large brush fire located in the area of Citrus Way, northwest of the Cemex Plant.

There are unofficial estimates that upwards of 25 acres are burning at this time.

There are no reports of structures currently in the path of the blaze.

UPDATE: 5/31/2015, 8:31 P.M. - Flames are reportedly 10 feet high and moving fast through extremely heavy fuel at this time. There are unconfirmed reports that upwards of 300 to 400 acres are in the fire’s path and it has already burned an estimated 50 acres.

UPDATE: 5/31/2015, 9:01 P.M. – According to unofficial reports, the fire is still moving extremely fast towards Kensington Road and Citrus Way. It is estimated to be approximately 100 to 150 acres and growing.

UPDATE: 5/31/2015, 11:21 P.M. - A Sheriff’s Office helicopter was used to provide firefighters an accurate position and heading of the fire. Sources say the fire has burned out to the north near Kensington Road; however, there is still an active fire to the south. The fire is expected to burn out before daylight tomorrow.
