BROOKSVILLE – Some residents living in the Country Oak Estate subdivision were shocked at a letter they received, asking them to keep out “undesirable elements” from their neighborhood. And the details of the letter are reminiscent of what you might expect during the “Jim Crow” era.
The letter in part reads, “In order to preserve the value of our homes and land we must all take necessary measures to prevent any further decline in our property values.” The author further states, “We now have blacks, immigrants, half breed kids, goats and even a puppy mill right here in the middle of Country Oak Estates.” The author closes by stating, “Take time to make sure just what type of person you may be selling to. Please remember that if you sell to the wrong type of person, that the rest of us will have to deal with the problem, that this creates for years to come.”The person who brought this letter to our attention asked not to be identified but says, “I am personally acquainted with families that live in Country Oak Estates and frankly they are concerned for their safety.”
Allen Edwards, who lives in the neighborhood, says “This is Incomprehensible.” Edwards tells RNRF that there are several mixed-race families living in Country Oak Estates and they are all hard-working good people.” Edwards goes on to say, “Far more damage will be done to our property values by someone like this in living in our neighborhood than by having people of different races living here.”
I talked to Kenneth Williams, a black man who was working in the neighborhood, and he said, “People just need to grow up. I mean it’s 2017. It’s really sad that people just won’t grow up.”Another neighbor said, “I can’t believe we live in a day and age where someone is so ignorant that they would think others would follow his recommendation to keep out other races.”
RNRF could not find one person who agreed with the content of the letter and the author remains unidentified.

Regarding the water bill story, what we revealed during our investigations was more than relevant. Tracy Thomas was evicted in February for not paying rent since November of 2016. The house is set for Auction on May 30th. She was also evicted from the prior residence for not paying rent.
