Toddler Mauled by Pit Bull Transported to Trauma Center, Dog Shot, Killed by Owner

SPRING HILL (PASCO) – A 3-year-old boy has suffered traumatic injuries to the face, after he was mauled by the family Pit Bull at a residence on Memory Lane.

According to sources, Fire Rescue responded to 16301 Memory Lane after reports that a toddler has suffered serious injuries to the face. The child has been transported to Bayonet Point Hospital, where it is believed that he will be airlifted to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa for pediatric trauma care.

Source say the dog’s owner shot and killed the Pit Bull after the mauling occurred.

A second victim was also bitten but we have no information on their condition.

A similar incident occurred in 2014 where a female was bitten by a Pit Bull at that same address.

We will bring more on this story as it develops.

UPDATE: 12:14 P.M. - Pasco County Officials say the 3-year-old victim does not have life-threatening injuries.

      1. your right.
it’s all on how it is raised.
I have transport pit bill that where hurt or hit by cars and you know they only kiss me all the way to a Rescue.
and they where on the kill list to be put down.
because they where hurt in one way or another.

      2. It’s for sure NOT the breed. Any dog can attack.. It’s how these animals are raised. You should see my 6 month old and our TWO pitbulls. She falls alseep on them. They love and protect our kids and allow my kids to dress them up.. It’s all about how they are raised. But not everyone will agree..

    1. It’s not the breed it’s the owners! Children should NEVER be left alone with any animal! A previous bite at the same address! The parent should be charged with child endangerment.

    2. Its not the breed its were u get them and how they r raised N treated as well as trained any dog can kill maul or bite and most time its due to poor ownership

    3. If people did there home work they would know they’re high energy dogs,if they get no training nd exercise they get all this pined up energy, letting them.run in a fenced in backyard works for some dogs but some need the discipline along with exercise.Picking a proper pittbull is important too,so please don’t talk about banning the breed, little dogs are way worst then Pitts but it’s OK they cause little to no damage.

      Pittbull owner nd lover

    4. Don’t blame the breed for the deed. It’s human fault for how the Pitbull is looked at and the incidents that happen.
I feel for the family and the little boy that was hurt. My prayers are with them.
Bottom line, we are responsible for how our dogs are trained and to acess their behavior before allowing them around children, adults or other pets. It could of been a poodle, a golden retriever or any dog that did this.

    5. These dogs are inherently dangerous due to their genetics. I’m sure, like in thousands of similar cases, the dog was a sweet family pet.

Defending these animals is defying basic logic.

      1. That is a crock of bull. Like Pucho said, they are high energy dogs. ANY DOG can attack if provoked. Your logic is totally off base. Logic would dictate that stupid people should not own the breed. Especially if they feel the way you do. Logic dictates that any dog cannot be trusted and therefore, children should not be around them.

        1. These dogs are dangerous due to their genetics. It’s a fact that is logically sound. The number of “sweet family dogs” that “would never hurt anyone” is astronomical for pit bulls. Anyone who owns these animals and lets them loses should be charged with a felony at a minimum. There is no doubt as to their danger - only the ignorant make excuses for them - because they “like” them, not because of any facts.

      2. I disagree about the genetics do some research pit bulls used to be called nanny dogs because back in the day people use them to watch their children also most children that get mauled whether by pitbull or any other animal is due to carelessness of the adults and the training of the animals my husband is a good example of that he got mauled in the face by the family dog when he was a child and no it wasn’t a pitbull it was a Rottweiler mix but his father was Food Training the dog and when my husband went to pet the dog when he was eating the dog turned on him this is how it happens just saying

        1. Hey Holly….do some more research….that whole story about Pitbulls being Nanny Dogs is false and created by a Pitbull support group to boost the image of the dogs but it is 100% false. You should not come on here and tell someone to do their research when you dont fully research the topic yourself. Because of the profession I am in, I am very well versed on Pitbulls and the statistics with Pitbull attacks compared to all other breeds and they are the most dangerous breed of dog. The breed is bad and it does not matter how they are raised, trained or anything else. They are genetically unstable and can snap at any time and are more likely to snap and cause serious or fatal damage than any other breed of dog.

      3. You should keep your ignorant statement to your self. What training in canine genetics do you have to back this so called theory of yours? Please teach me because I have studied biology and never heard of there being a gene of inherently dangerous.

    6. It is not breed specific but mostly it is how they are raised. I know plenty of pitbulls that wouldn’t hurt anybody. There was a time when pits were known as the family dog and many family’s owned them because they were known to have such a kind loving demeanor. Its the stupid humans that turn innocent animals into killers.

    7. 6 percent of dogs… 87 percent of deaths. Plus thousands more brutal attacks. No genetics at work here.

You people obviously haven’t done any homework. Most of these posts were previously thought of as sweet animals.

The pro dangerous animal crowd people are simply blinded by their love and immune to reason.

  1. So if there’s two incidents at the same residence that should tell you something. It’s not the breed! I say this before all the haters of the breed get on their soap box. Animals are just that! Raise and treat them correctly and they will be loyal.

        1. Umm the person that raised qas not at faught either the dog had something wrong with his ticker sometimes just like humans dogs are born with issues fu#& haters

      1. Why kill them all? I have 2 an they are like my kids. I love them to death. They are really good dogs. I have them ten years an never have they once bit anyone. It’s how they are raised.

    1. You’re absolutely correct it is not the breed every dog is different it depends on how they’re treated how they’re raised dogs have feelings too we don’t know the whole situation so let’s not jump the gun and for the people saying kill all pit bulls are ridiculous

    2. I agree it’s not the breed. The owner has a toddler, gun, and vicious dog regardless of the breed. The gun is the bigger problem in this scenario. The owner shot the dog in anger. Let the authorities deal with the dog and take care of the toddler. Poor baby.

      1. Its not the viciousness that is responsible, its just that they are very strong animals so they can do a lot more damage without as much effort as other dogs and a lot of these dogs who did attack probably were raised to be aggressive and pits are one of the highest up there in dogs that are mistreated and used for fighting or raised as a weapon, so maybe its the fact that this breed is being targeted by scumbags, that this number is so high. What came first? This breed being known as a loveable family dog , or them being misused and mistreated by humans? If you said them having a good reputation as family dogs then you would be correct!

    3. I CAN’T STAND THESE PEOPLE THAT MAKE STUPID, BLANKET STATEMENTS WHEN THEY OBVIOUSLY DO NOT KNOW WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT. FIRST IT WAS THE GERMAN SHEPARDS, THEN IT WAS THE DOBERMANS AND THEN THE ROTTWEILERS. WHEN ARE PEOPLE GOING TO REALIZE ITS THE HUMANS AND NOT THE DOGS?? TRAIN THEM CORRECTLY, GIVE THEM PROPER FOOD, EXERCISE AND ATTENTION AND KEEP AN EYE ON THEM. EVEN CATS CAN BE NASTY. DON’T LEAVE ANY YOUNG CHILD WITH ANY ANIMAL. IT’S JUST GOOD COMMON SENSE.

  2. So once again PIT BULL there no good so don’t tell me it’s how you raise them they all need to be KILLED and outlaw From the state of Florida. So who will be the first to say i don’t know what I’m talking about BS you know there killers. So if you don’t agree don’t give me back.

    1. you’re like the rest of those idiots, blaming the dog. there are a lot of pit bulls that are very nice and not vicious, and that is because they have good owners. you don’t know the full story so shut your mouth before blaming the animal. any dog can be vicious if the owners don’t treat it right or the dog is around violent or angry people. so stop blaming the dog idiot

      1. I maybe a Idiot But just wait some day i hope and prey you lose a Family member like i did many years ago to a sweet little pit bull ! by the way may the little one in your picture go through what the 3 Year old did.

        Signed THE IDIOT

    2. Wow! I’ve never seen so much ignorance on one page in my whole life! Pitt Bulls were actually bred and trained to be handled by their owners easily. Do you really believe that the idiots that fight dogs want to be bitten by them? No, they are going to breed them to attack other dogs, not humans. So any so called aggressive breeds will be trained NOT to bite humans, unless the dumb humans provoke them into going against their nature.

    3. Well, I can’t say much because you Grammer and English proves your intelligents. So obviously, your ignorant starts has no backing. So, just dont comment so your lack of intelligence doesn’t show.

  3. I feel so sorry for this child. As a dog lover and owner of large dogs from German shepherds, Norwegian elkhounds and chow chows, I am the last person to condemn an entire breed. That being said, however, owners of these types of dogs need to be aware of the people in that household who will be interacting with that dog! Babies, toddlers, and small children should NEVER be left unattended with the dogs! Regardless of how much we, their alphas, love our dogs, they are still canines, and being so have reactions and responses that can’t always be predicted!
I wasn’t there, so I don’t know the circumstances of this attack and I am in no way blaming anyone for the incident, I am simply making a statement that, hopefully, prevents another incident somewhere else!
My sincerest prayers for this toddler and his/her family during such a horrifying time! God be with all of you ⚘

      1. then I blame the owners for being irresponsible, not taking the poor dog for medical attention. If you can’t afford to maintain your pets, DON’T HAVE THEM. I treat my pets better than some treat their kids.

  4. I think people need to stop complaing about pitbull i have 3 amazing pitbull that would wven let a robber in my house but no people so quick to judge never judge a book by its cover if they are taught to be aggressive then they will be and they will attack but mine are lovers
    ITS EVERYDOG NOT JUST PITBULLS

  5. For all those ignorant about the breed let me give you some education. I am a certified dog trainer and American Pitt Bull Terriors (which is thier true breed name) are actually one of the best breeds to train. That is why the police and fire departments and the military are all using them as service dogs. The criminal charges are to be on the head of the owner. Especially since this is the second time. I have owned and raised this breed and know very well how they are. The smallest breeds can actually be more aggressive than the larger breeds. The person saying kill them all has obviously had no interaction with this breed. Ignorance is a loaded gun killing the innocent. This breed originated from the Scottish area and were brought over to this country. They are participating in dog shows and serve as entertainment in such movies as the little rascals. So people need to take responsibility for the animal and if you are not capable of training it and correctly handling it as an animal that is domesticated then don’t own it. This goes for dogs and cats and any other animal you want to keep as a pet.

  6. Littler dogs do seem to bitei: ‘ankle biters’, they just don’t usually send people to trauma units. There are 4 pits on my street all are male and ‘NONE ARE NEUTERED’! They run away if given the opportunity. Can’t blame the dogs, just the stupid owners.

  7. It is NOT the breed. I’ve owned dogs from tiny to weighing more than myself & when they were around children or new people I supervised intensely. Also, my dogs were family members who got treated with respect & decency but when bad were CORRECTED PROPERLY not beaten or banished. I’ve seen chows chained in backyards & ignored except for feeding who were out of control. All owner needed to do was train properly but tbey couldn’t be bothered. PARENTS NEED TO SUPERVISE THEIR CHILDREN AT ALL TIMES NOT JUST WHEN WITH THE DOG.
This child will have numerous scars, surgeries & alot of pain. God bless you little love. I pray for your recovery.
I pray your parents (??) become aware & start being parents.

    1. Its not funny at all. Other dogs just dont attack people nearly as much as Pitbulls and the damage from other dogs is not nearly as lethal as a Pitbull because a Pitbull will not stop attacking.

  8. Why would you have your child around a dog that has bitten someone? It’s common sense if you’re going to have children it’s time to get rid of the aggressive dog or you’re just as immature as everybody else that blames it on the breed!

  9. It is not the breed and possibly not the owner either… All dogs have the potential to do something like this.. remember they were once wild animals until we “domesticated” them. Yes how they are raised plays a huge part… but any dog can do this. It is a risk we all take when owning them, regardless of breed.

  10. Just an FYI - Citrus county animal control has in past taken in viscious dogs ( a lot of pits & other breeds also) & then rehomed these animals !!! NOT WITH GOOD RESULTS. One particular dog was rehomed over 5 times & brought back !!!! Once bad habits are learned it’s work to undo & today people don’t or won’t take time to GO TO OBEDIENCE TRAINING & WORK CONSISTENTLY WITH THE ANIMAL.
Please don’t get a pet if you don’t have time to do right by it.

  11. In recent years pit bull type dogs have gotten a reputation of being overly aggressive and dangerous. Often leading to calls for bans and breed specific legislation. But is all of the clamor for action really justified?

Most dog bite charts and statistics are only numbers and those numbers at face values seem quite staggering.
Pit bulls at 4.4% of the dog population had 2235 attacks resulting in bodily harm. While chows had only 55 and huskys had 71. But those dogs account for 0.01% and 0.05% of the dog population. That creates a skewed figure comparison by not presenting bite statistics PER CAPITA. If you look at those numbers and compare them you will see that had there been the same number of chow and husky dogs as there were pit bulls that the chow would have had a staggering 24,200 dog attacks and the husky a whopping 6,245 attacks. Now compare those numbers to the pit bull attacks numbers of 2235. You have to compare apples to apples and when you do, the statistics don’t lie.

Another angle to consider in the breed wars is the past dangerous and “killer breeds”. Including dobermans, German Shepard’s and Rottweilers. All three of these dogs were called out as being vicious, aggressive, and violent in the past 4 decades. But all in different eras. Seemingly moving from breed to breed as the numbers adjusted. One look at past statistics and you will see that during the period of years each dog was called out for its temperament they were extremely popular both in families and with criminals and those looking to do no good. This lead to a spike in population and poor breeding and behavioral training. Again skewing the numbers. Now it’s the pit bull that is having its turn in the light. With one main difference, the internet. Being able to connect people from across the country and spread information nationally almost instantly, there’s more mob mentality and calls for unjust action. But sadly the internet and its information fails to create accurate, per capita numbers for us to analyze and this leads to the same trap those dogs of past decades have fallen into.

Finally a look into size. These large dogs are given the only consideration due to their large size it is easy to cause harm. But does that mean a dog that’s more aggressive but less able to deal harm or death should get a pass on a bad rap? Dachshunds are the most aggressive dogs in the world with one in five attacking a stranger and one in twelve attacking their owner. But due to their small size they often only cause minor injuries. But sadly that was not the case for a one month old boy in France who was mauled to death by a dachshund in 1997. What about the jack Russell terrier? Known as an energetic dog and loved by many it’s also known as the most likely dog to attack people in the U.K. But again due to small size it’s overlooked for being ill tempered and aggressive at times. Why is it that again small breed dogs are overlooked for their bad behavior even though some have worse temperament some larger dogs?

The facts at hand are this, before all of the do gooders and torch wielding mobs out there subject another breed to the fear of annihilation. Look at the facts objectively, clearly and evenly. Look at global statistics, look at small breed statistics and large breed. Look at the bites per capita per breed. Take a look at how little the dog bite numbers go down after breed specific legislation. Even after all the “violent dogs” are removed. New breeds fill the void of poor training and socialization leading to bad behavior. It’s not a breed thing. It’s a simple numbers thing. More dogs of a breed will make it SEEM like their more likely to bite. Those facts are rarely true.

  12. If your child is abuse and treated with no respect , and grows up to harm others, due to his/her up bringing…..then we should kill the BREED, not those who taught them to fight ,and not train them to obey! Mmmmmmmm…….

  13. This completely pisses me off because neither the child or dog deserve this. I have had pit bulls my whole life and they have never harmed a fly so what did these ppl do to this dog to make him so vicious?????? I cant stand that it had to be specified as a PIT BULL ATTACK!!!! A dog is a dog and it has to do with its raising and training and treatment. Prayers for both the child and dog.
    COMPLETELY DISGUSTED IN THIS WORLD!!!

    1. Thankyou. The family is devastate. Family pet got sick, then snapped before making it to the vet. It does happen.. Any dog gets sick, it had the potential to be deadly. Thank god baby boy and dad will recover. Not only did they suffer injuries, but also all this negativity…. Blame. My brothers little lap dog went after a child.. Just once (rip) never had been aggressive until one day… Bam. 🙁

  14. dogs are still carnivores with domesticated behavior but still have certain instincts. I know you all love your dogs but Most people either get these pits from abusive places or they are inbred often to make fast cash. My mom has had pits with never an issue. She usually has a dozen dogs now my sisters boyfriend had a large pit and while he slept it attacked him and mauled him very bad. these dogs again are often from abusive situations, or the breeding is done by backyard trash trying to make some beer and cigarette money. Its russian roulette when you do get this breed. Im not saying genetically they are programmed to be aggressive but the popularity of the breed has left its mark as it gets as unregulated as anything with such comes issues.

  15. I feel so bad that this happened to a child. Pitbulls in general are very good with people especially children, they cam be animal agressive and are a very strong breed that needs knowledge and training. Some dogs regardless of breed may not be able to live in a home. We do not know all the specifics of this case and are blaming a dog because it is a pitbull, which isnt fair. They are not all mean, if you would actually take the time to get to know a real putbulk you will soon figure out that they are good dogs. Banning an entire breed is not the answer. This breed is a chosen breed for fighting brcause of loyalty, stamina , and ability to train. If you really look into the breed you will see that even most fighting dogs are extremely friendly with people, this is again because of the love forbhumans that most have and the hamdler has to be able to break up a fight without injury. If any of you had a family member that killed a person do you think we should assume that your entire bloodline is dangerouse ? It is not in their genes to be agressive to people.

  16. Russ,
Your statistics are quite impressive and reiterate the fact that animal behavior is unpredictable and can be dangerous when proper training AND supervision are not utilized at all times for any large dog!

    1. Thank you.

But remember also even small dogs such as a daushund or jack russell terrier can be dangerous around infants and toddlers. It’s the aggressiveness in dogs that’s important to analyze and not just their ability to deliver a bigger bite when provoked.

      1. Yes, Russ, so very true. My granddaughter has a small terrier (terror) that we have to kennel when guests arrive….while the two chows happily greet everyone! Only dog breeds that I’ve ever been bitten by…chihuahua and toy poodle! Go figure. 😯

  17. If the dog was sick then it should not be around a toddler. Dogs may be pets but are still an animal that makes its emotions known through actions. Should have been kept away from a child until it was healthy again.

  18. It’s the owner and how they raise them if your going to have a pit you need to do some research on them. Also in how you raise your child like the idiots who don’t pay attention to the kids and let them pick on any kind of dogs if I were a dog id bite em too nd to all the dumb idiots saying that they should all be banned nd killed maybe you should be banned or killed they are just like any other breed of dog I got a yd full nd wouldn’t hesitate for a second on takin my 2 yr old son out there with them they absolutely love him to death..hell me nd my 8 yr old feed and water all my dogs ..i guarantee you a Chihuahua would bite before half of the pits I know. It never said not one time in the article if the child provoked the dog or not.. I feel bad for the kid for what happened but like I said the whole truth ain’t out in that article and all you idiots are talkin bout Banning them nd killin them screw you that’s my breed how dare you down them if you ain’t never owned one dont talk shit it’s every other day I see stupid ass articles about my breed of dog attackin people nd the ppl who write the articles dont even write the whole truth about how the dog got provoked or how its lived its life.
Always and forever a pit. Lover

  19. Everyone says it is how they are raised, and I would agree to some extent. Most of the people who own pitbulls, are trash, there are exceptions, but the vast majority I have had the displeasure of coming into contact with, push of rather violent characteristics, along with paranoia. In fact, it is probably why they got the dog to begin with, pitbulls have a nasty reputation, one which would make your typical trashy person squeal with delight.

If you own a pitbull, and are feeling outraged right now, let me ask you this, how often do you get in fights? Have the police been to your house this year, even if it is not your fault, do you find yourself often using illegal drugs (marijuana included) and lastly do you drink cheap beer?

Whenever I see an unkempt house with busch beer cans tossed around in the yard, an older vehicle that does not run, windows wide open, I almost always suspect there is a pitbull somewhere on the premise, along with a few other dogs, and a yard full of poop.

    I’m a jerk, I know..

    1. Thank you for sharing the statistics on this site, “Pitbulls are bad.” I found the geographic locations of the documented attacks as thought provoking as horrifying…..

    2. The site you linked to has a large amount of information, but that information seems to be a bit far fetched and to be honest, poorly sourced.

In fact the statistics on dogs popularity and overall percentage of the population was generated from the number of classified ads that were listed for a breed in a limited number of areas. That is definitely not a scientific means to determine ACCURATE numbers of dogs in our midst. A better way may have been several independent sources such as verified studies by government entities like the CDC for example or collage research groups or numbers gathered by veterinary groups over a large area covering the entire United States and not a small region. My information for example came from studies from the United States CDC, the national health service of the U.K. The American kennel club And the American veterinary medical association, all cross verified as much as possible for accuracy.

Your link also states that the pit bull is the most popular dog in the United States, but according to an article done by the today show, (a leading national news agency) the American kennel club (the leading and most respected dog identification and registration entity in the United States), released rankings for 2015 that put the golden retriever as the most popular dog, followed by the German Shepard, in fact no pit bulls or related breeds were in the top 5 most popular at all and have not been the most popular for at least 24 years. I’m more confidant in the numbers generated by sites and sources like this than online classified advertisements for dogs in a few cities.

So please I encourage anyone who reads any of these comments, please, verify the information you read on the internet through well established sources and and documents.

  20. Tralollollo! Tell Us How You Really Feel. Truer Words Have Never Been Spoken! Love it. I am sure that will Piss off a lot of Inbreds or Trailer Trash! But You are so Right : )

  21. Snake bite who to blame pit owner’s shark attack its climate change get bit in own yard by dog ” i have none” call someone and my fault. There made for fighting thats it sorry. Hope the girl gets better fast and pit owners you sound as violent as the dog.

  22. sorry but i agree its the breed I had one that was raise from 6 weeks and it was treated like a baby and then one day it snapped and killed my other dog If its not the breed why is it that any time someone is mauled by a dog its almost always a pit bull sorry but people with small children should not have this breed i think they should be ban

  23. I must be missing something…since most of you say it’s not genetic. I just don’t understand how a properly trained and supervised, my dog would never hurt a fly, “I’ve raised Pitts all my life” could mail or viciously bite someone?
