A Man’s Champagne Taste on a Beer Budget Leads to Retail Theft Charge

BROOKSVILLE – Not everyone can afford an expensive bottle of champagne, even on the most special of occasions, but a local transient thought he could get away with a fine bottle of bubbly last Friday by simply shoving it down his pants and walking out of a local Walmart.

That’s exactly what officials say 21-Year-old Robert Michael Hale did, when he walked into the Walmart Supercenter on Cortez Blvd and walked out with a $52.00 bottle of Moet Chandon. Unfortunately for Hale, loss prevention employees were hot on his trail and stopped him when he passed all points of sales.

Hale told deputies during an interview that he intended on selling the champagne to a fellow homeless man in exchange for cash.

Hale was booked into the Hernando County Jail on one count of retail theft and later posted a $1,000 bond.

  • theres plenty of opportunity here, there is no excuse to swipe alcohol. I can see a loaf of bread or similar but stop trying to rationalize retail theft of booze in the comments section..lol Life is what you make of it. You get what you put in.

  • Rebel Pride, last idea I heard a hernando countian plug for jobs/growth was a zip line in brooksville!!! Then it was a welcome center in weekie wachee – something only visited once by tourists. Retirees are not mine. Yes they are bored. Todays youth learned from their folks & don’t want to do janitorial work, or manual labor. You shouldn’t be starting a family if you don’t have a steady income. Still nature coast offers nothing to remedy situation.

  • It is a shame at 21 he is homeless. Nature coast area is like a closed shop – if you don’t know someone you can’t get a job , let alone one paying enough to cover rent & utilities, etc. Everything seems to be part time & minimum wage.
