Gates Outguns Hoglund as Nature Coast downs Fivay 9-1

By: Brandon Webster

For the first five innings, one of the area’s premier pitching matchups didn’t disappoint as J.P. Gates and Gunnar Hoglund traded zeros to open to season.

In a contest of who would flinch first, Nature Coast (1-0) would come away victorious Tuesday, downing Fivay 9-1, behind a late offensive explosion.

Gates went four innings while striking out ten for the Sharks in a hitless effort, while Hoglund went 4.2 hitless innings while striking out nine.

After the starters departed, the bullpens would take over for both teams and Nature Coast would see their offense awaken.

The Sharks would do all their damage in the bottom of the sixth scoring nine runs.
Brandon Frangione was the star of the inning as he led off the sixth with a walk, scoring on an RBI single before hitting a grand slam to put the Sharks out in front for good.
Fivay managed to get a run in the top of the seventh to avoid the shutout.
