BROOKSVILLE – Sheriff Al Nienhuis met with reporters this morning where announced the capture the second suspect in yesterday’s armed robbery of the Dollar General in Ridge Manor. According to Nienhuis, investigators worked through the night attempting to locate the suspect, who was found hiding in the area of Rackley Road and Saturn Road, less than a mile from where he fled from a vehicle. Officials have not released the identity of the suspect; however, through our own investigation Derek Kelly and the now deceased Michael Hilber (Pictured below) are most likely the two suspects.
While fleeing the scene of the robbery, a witness attempted to block their pickup truck under the overpass at I-75. The suspects damaged the man’s vehicle and battered him trying to get away. The witness was not seriously injured. A second witness followed the suspects to the intersection of Saturn Road and Endsley Road, where they abandoned their blue 2000 Chevy pickup truck.
Nienhuis says while searching the south end of Rackley Road, Sgt. Matt Lillibridge and K-9 Deputy Steven Miller, both long time veterans of the agency, used deadly force during an encounter with Michael Hilber. Both deputies are now on paid administrative leave as standard procedure.
Nienhuis says both suspects are wanted in connect with string of crimes across several states, including an incident earlier this month in New Hampshire, where Kelly dragged a police officer several feet along a roadway, as the officer was attempting to serve an arrest warrant WMUR News 9 Report.
Nienhuis also believes Hilber is responsible for a Subway Restaurant robbery in Sarasota two days ago and possibly several other Tampa Bay Robberies.
Ironically, just last week in the area of South Broad Street, near Southern Hills Plantation, numerous deputies, including several K-9 units, conducted simulated fugitive pursuits, in which deputies were “shot” as part of a real-time scenarios.
