Hernando, Weeki Wachee Fall Short

David Hale Bronson ran for 128 yards and three scores, but even his 170 all-purpose yards weren’t enough as Hernando fell to South Sumter 47-28 Friday.

The host Raiders (2-0) jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead as Malik Bell scored on an 8-yard run. Hernando (1-1) would answer as Jacob Butts found the end zone on 4-yard dive.

South Sumter’s high-powered offense punched it in Deon Williams would score on the ground, making it 15-8 at the end of the first.

Both teams would score twice in the second quarter as Bronson scored from 1 and 8 yards out for the Leopards, while Cordell Scott rushed for a touchdown and quarterback Jaylon Taylor threw for another.

Trailing 29-21, Hernando would get no closer, as South Sumter would score three more times in the second half led by Bokeyon Rice, who had a 40-yard rushing score.

Bronson would add another 1-yard touchdown run to finish the scoring.

Butts finished with 63 yards rushing, while quarterback Scott Bierwiler was 5-of-8 through the air for 77 yards and added another 72 on the ground.

Hernando finished with 382 yards of total offense, and look to carry momentum into their next game at Lecanto. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 P.M., weather permitting.

Hudson 35, Weeki Wachee 21

The visiting Cobras of Hudson High jumped out to a 21-0 halftime lead, and fought off a Weeki Wachee comeback to win 35-21 Friday.

Hudson (1-0), finally got their season underway and showed off the arm and leg of quarterback Cyler Doran.

Doran, who had 419 yards (201 passing, 218 rushing), paced the Cobra’s 684 yards of total offense.

The senior rushed for three scores, but turned it over with three interceptions through the air.

Trailing 21-0 at the half, the Hornets (0-2) came back in the second half behind Alec Cromie.

The Weeki Wachee quarterback threw for three scores and 377 yards through the air, but his two inceptions didn’t help the comeback.

Andrew Stephenson finished with three catches for 106 yards and a score, while Montae Bostick had 99 yards on the ground for the Hornets.

For Hudson, Remynte Turner had 10 carries for 194 yards.

Weeki Wachee hosts First Coast (Jacksonville) Friday, with kickoff scheduled for 7:30 P.M., weather permitting.
