Local LEO Stopped by “PC Police” - Confiscates Gun shaped Novelty House Key

PORT CANAVERAL (BREVARD) – A Spring Hill man got quite a shock Sunday, when he was stopped by security while boarding a cruise ship and told that he could not bring his novelty house key on board the ship.

Henry Echevarria and his family were boarding Carnival’s Liberty Cruise Ship when a security guard noticed that Henry’s house key resembled a handgun (See image below).

Henry says the guard called out “We have a code orange” and told Henry that he could not bring the key on board the ship, due to Carnival’s strict policy on items that resemble firearms.

Henry questioned the issue, prompting a supervisor to take a closer look at the 2” by 1/8” thick house key. The supervisor agreed with the guard’s decision and told Henry that he would have to leave it behind.

With no other choice, the security guard offered to hold the key in their safe until Henry returned from his trip.

It should be noted that Henry mentioned he was a local law enforcement officer but that didn’t seem to help his case with the ship’s security.

We asked several RNRF viewers what they thought of the rule and if they believed this is a prime example of political correctness “gone wild.” Albert Superczynski says “That’s just sad that someone was refused to board with a key because of what is painted on it. I feel for those who might have alligator, painted keys. I mean, alligators could eat someone, just like this gun could shoot someone.”

Ursula Markey says “It’s a stupid rule but it’s their ship. I go to a lot of places that I think have stupid rules, but I do my best to follow them.”

Rules are rules but we contacted Jennifer De La Cruz, Vice President of Corporate Communications with Carnival Cruise Lines who says “Our Prohibited Items Policy does prohibit all firearms, including replicas, imitations and their components; However, common sense would clearly indicate that a house key in the shape of a firearm is not the sort of thing we’re referring to with the term ‘replica.’” De La Cruz further stated “A member of our home office security leadership team reached out to the company we contract with for security services… This was apparently a new employee and we have initiated corrective coaching.”

Henry says in all his previous cruises with Carnival they have never given him a problem with the gun shaped key. He also questions why guests can bring back replica pirate muskets from various ports and security never seems to have a problem with those items.

Henry is happy to hear the situation is resolved but one question remains; has our society become so hypersensitive over firearms that even an artist’s depiction can lead to fear and uncertainty?

  1. Oh yes another cop trying to use his position to change an outcome. Smh. Henry was arrested two years earlier in a different County so I guess that doesn’t matter. He’s still working and carrying his little gun key

      1. My apologies. I just checked my resources and you are correct. He’s still trying to use his position to gain favor though. Again my apologies for the mistake.

          1. Yes different standards. They can do whatever they want and vet away with it normally. nperhaps you should get a clue Food or get a life.

        1. Nope what I said was that I was a Deputy and know very well not to bring a weapon on a cruise ship. Was in no way trying to gain any favors as I have been on prior cruises with my same house key and NEVER had an issue and I will Quote the VP of Carnival “Common sense” knows it’s a house key.

    1. First of all you were not there, 2nd what I said was I am a Deputy and I would never bring a weapon on a cruise. So before you make a ridiculous statement like the one you just made without 1st knowing me or being there is just wrong. I don’t know you therefore I will chalk your comment up to being a misunderstanding on your behalf.

  2. Hey its one of the rule that apply to anybody,I just got off of the Carnival Magic last Saturday and the only hassle I had with security was my fault.Read the rules before arriving and follow them even if you do not agree with them.

  3. It is clearly a case of how our society has become so crazy over anything that resembles a firearm. It’s gone over the top! Your can point your finger directly to the guy that is leaving the White House in 4 more days as the cause of this paranoia. Good riddance to him and his band of idiots! Finally, the grass root American has spoken. Now America, get over the paranoia.

    1. Crown, interesting opinion. I guess you forgot the duct tape on your windows or the colored fake levels of terror in 2001.Paranoia was taken to a new level. My opinion is what kind of power head trip loser needs a key shaped like a gun? He must be making up for something tiny in his life

No, this doesn’t stop with Dumph, it only gets worse

      1. The man is a law enforcement officer and a hand gun is an everyday item in his line of work. Would you claim a carpenter who had a replica hammer on his key chain was making up for something? I bet when someone drives a car you can’t afford you think they “must be making up for something”. Dumb .

        1. Your just plain stupid you and food enjoy yourselves must be a police offiver if your that mad cuz i cant spell you are a sick man pray your not law enforcement with that temper. Thats a period better crazy 🐔

  4. Thats how were treated traveling why and who cares 1000s a day treat worse with a 80 year old in a wheel chair oh im a cop hell know i cant you cant no story here where’s bethey

      1. Sure do p@$$& i cant spell well and my hands are the size of your moms head o excuse me for not being like you troll food likes guys like you stay with him he knows all ill drop your mother off later

        1. See Mike, the thing is, if you want to try and insult someone it works much better if you can put together a coherent sentence, otherwise it is just an indistinguishable jumble of words.

  5. If the police officer, who is supposed to know right from wrong, had read his contract, he would have left his weird key at home. He should have known better. It is stupidity on his part that this became an issue. Just so I understand, because he is an idiot, some new employee who was following the rules, has to have further training? Give me a break.

    1. Did you miss this part of the story?

Jennifer De La Cruz, Vice President of Corporate Communications with Carnival Cruise Lines who says “Our Prohibited Items Policy does prohibit all firearms, including replicas, imitations and their components; However, common sense would clearly indicate that a house key in the shape of a firearm is not the sort of thing we’re referring to with the term ‘replica.’” De La Cruz further stated “A member of our home office security leadership team reached out to the company we contract with for security services… This was apparently a new employee and we have initiated corrective coaching.”

  6. So sad i took a cruise in sept of 16 and was allowed to board from the bahamas a wooden pirate gun they did take it but held it till the last morning of the cruise, but the house key situation is just way too much a mans key to his own house… smh..

  7. It does seem a bit ridiculous, but when you consider 9/11 happened with box cutters, and that SwissMiniGun makes an actual gun about that size, I’m not so sure it is.

  8. If I had a novelty gun, a real looking one that was really a house key thing, I wouldn’t bring it on flights or cruise ships, to Disney, or to school, to the court house, etc. Because it is common sense that eventually it would cause a problem for me with dome person, somewhere. Just saying

      1. Not Sam sorry food who has done everything i mean solder police dct emt maybe prez. Race car driver he is a dad though for real oh he said he was apache pilot love ya boy 🐑

        1. are you sure you are reading my posts correctly? hitting a few too many off grandpas old cough syrup there boy? Im older but young at heart..lol Ive lived her for a long time. People get shocked I actually know people or drive in the same county I live in.. Its like its breaking news.

  9. REALLY??? This is news?? Did he get his key back when he needed it?? WTF!! There’s REAL things happening out there, this is a crap story. Sorry tom , but ur off ur game.

  10. “He’s a new employee”. What about the supervisor, was he new too? They said it was the company policy, the company spokes persons said it wasn’t. Looks like the security guard, who wants a ‘living wage’ of $15 hr, should use a little more common sense. It’s a key, not a gun -DUH

    1. Mr. Cop was in the wrong, and as a new employee the company should have trained them better in the beginning. The man was doing his job, for this is what the prohibited policy states. Mr. Cop should have known better then to try to violate the rules and the only reason the spokesperson said what she did is because this is negative news towards a shitty cruise line anyway. Carnival is a cheap, dirty, disgusting group of boats that you will never catch me on.
All firearms Including replicas, Imitations and their components https://help.carnival.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/4090

    1. Very true. I’d never step foot on those dirty, nasty boats. Mr. Cop got what he paid for, and was treated as he’s treated people for a long time. I have no sympathy for someone who is using their status and his own error to try to garner sympathies.

  11. Seems there was a shortage of common sense. The cop should not have brought the key shaped like a gun The screener should’ve let the key go. Tom should have never reported such a lame story.

I’m a carpenter, I don’t have a key shaped like a hammer because I don’t want to look like an idiot.

    1. EXACTLY!! Where was the common sense of the damn cop? I also agree, this is a non story that Tom covered and the cop is only using his mistake to try to garner sympathy and probably to get his next cruise at a discounted rate.

        1. Yes I did. It clearly states that NO replica’s would be allowed. As far as the spokesperson saying what she did, well here is what the policy states. The cop had no common sense to violate the policy, nor to do it again with buying the necklace. Looks to me like Mr. Cop was looking to do what he did, and that’s make the headlines. It’s not like he needed the key when he was cruising anyway and he could have used his head prior to going through security and left that gun shaped key in his car. A replica of a gun, just like is prohibited by Carnival. I’ll wait and see if other news outlets waste their time on such a stupid story. I have no sympathy for someone who can’t follow rules, then cries to the media of something so damned minor. He’s an attention whore, plain and simple.

All firearms Including replicas, Imitations and their components https://help.carnival.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/4090

          1. You clearly have animosity towards law enforcement or something personal against this man to be so distraught over the article.
The spokesperson was clear in stating that the key did not fall under the guidelines of a “replica.” He did nothing wrong according to Carnival officials and that is why the guard has received “additional training.”

  12. I bet if john q. public were stopped, searched & found in possession of something similar by police they would confiscate it. I feel he should have left it at home. Comes under common sense & being an officer he should have some. Some folks could use this to rob people who are not firearms knowledgeable- remember things like finger stuck in jacket or pants pockets placed in someone’s back????

    1. If someone looks at a key painted like a gun and thinks it is a gun they deserve to have everything taken from them. It is 1/8th of an inch wide, even if they could make a bullet that minute, to fit in a gun that size, it would do about as much damage as a spit ball. Talk about having common sense.

        1. I’m guessing 3rd grade, is that the last year of school you finished? Just throwing random words out is not a good way to try and construct a sentence Mike.

      1. Rhyming, yep that’s what 3rd graders are good at. Maybe mommy will put your post up on the fridge to show how proud she is of you Mike. It doesn’t make any sense but you did rhyme 2 words.

  13. To be fair, people in general have become over sensitive. To make a spectacle out of a key chain shaped like a gun is silly by all participants. I would have just laughed it off and got on with life.

Life is too short to sweat the small things.

  14. Leo with a key chain gun, original article, Mitch you crossed a line on this one. To make fun of special needs children, or people in general is disgusting. I suppose you make fun of children with cancer, fighting for their lives, to live each and every day. You are a poor excuse for a human being, and often wonder WHY people like you continue to have the pleasure of living, while some good compassionate people die I feel sorry for you and pray you don’t have children, unfortunately they would grow up to be like you, bullying special needs, ill people. NO this is not about the poster Mike. Key word short bus and special. Stupid story anyway, with all that is going on in this country and county. ( Sorry Tom) guess the leo just needed a few minutes of fame. Have a nice life MITCH, Karma can bite you in the rear. You reap what you sow. You can jump on this one like a dog on a bone, I don’t care. There are SPECIAL PEOPLE OUT THERE AND UNFORTUNATELY YOU DON’T APPEAR TO BE ONE OF THEM. Aunt of a special needs young man and VERY PROUD OF HIM!! Aunt of a baby, weighed in at 1 lb, living, and thriving and yes she will probably ride that smaller yellow bus one day.
