Three People Lucky to Be Alive After Airboat Propeller “Explodes”

HUDSON – A close call for three people aboard an airboat yesterday, after an explosion caused the propeller to break free and cut through the hull of the vessel.

According to officials, Darrell Sedilko jr. his 9-year-old daughter and Casandra Miller were traveling in the area of Signal Cove and Hudson Beach when the propeller “exploded.” Due to the catastrophic failure, the boat suddenly decelerated and ejected Sedilko into the water. Officials say the vessel continued forward and ran over Sedilko before coming to a stop. Sedilko’s daughter was propelled into the seat in front of her and struck her torso. Surprisingly, all three occupants were not injured but the boat was beginning to take on water. Within minutes of the incident, a Good Samaritan picked up victims and brought them to shore.Ginger Gilman witnessed the incident while she was mowing a friend’s lawn on Beverly Drive. Gilman says she saw what appeared to be a small fishing boat strike a sandbar and watched as several people rushed to their aid.

None of the three occupants were transported for medical treatment.

There is no word on what caused the propeller to explode.

  1. years of working on boats and working in that specific area props dont explode. they can snap off or get dents etc. that area has many rocks and low level ground depending on tide. considering the person was ejected in such an event gives me a clear picture of what happened. dont worry folks you dont have to worry about shaft drive props io drive props or outboard props exploding. In the years I worked in that area I personally witnessed hundreds of people damage props on the rocks and low tide sand outside the channel markers right there in hudson. Thats b.o.a.t. . Break out another thousand.. thankfully they were all ok.

    1. If you would have read the description, you would have noticed this is an air-boat, not a regular In or outboard motor. An explosion sent the fan through the flexible haul, this boat does not have a prop. Your years of working on boats???

      1. when i first went on the story stated…

According to officials, Darrell Sedilko jr. his 9-year-old daughter and Casandra Miller were traveling in the area of Signal Cove and Hudson Beach when the propeller “exploded.”

props dont explode. engines can explode and btw an airboat is still a boat. when you order a replacement part it is considered a fan blade prop. still a propeller anything else? also ive seen airboats hit rocks out there and people go flying and it tear a hole in the haul.

        1. You should start with the first paragraph and quote it not the second.

“A close call for three people aboard an airboat yesterday, after an explosion caused the propeller to break free and cut through the hull of the vessel.” Pretty plain and explosion caused the fan blade (prop) to break loose and cut the hull (most likely rubber type material) and ruing the blade. What’s the big deal with you? Ruined, bent, explode, nicked, white vs gray who really cares.

          1. First off, That single group of words ending in a period is called a topic sentence not a paragraph..lol smh we can tell the edumacation is strong here..lol
            2nd
Its specifically said in separate sections of the story the prop exploded. The I know it done said dis but it done ment that mentality is conveyed here but asking what is the big deal is …Im just stating a solid fact and you have an issue with it..lol I should be asking whats the deal with you ? Ive come to realize factual information hurts some peoples noggins apparently. haha

In closing I get it the people such as myself with my science and facts aint welcome round dees here parts..lol

    1. You never ever put seatbelts on any type of boat. Unless you want to drown.

Like any other boat, if you crash, flip or are otherwise ejected from the vessel, you want to be wearing a life vest.

  2. Foodforthought started celebrating 4th of July early probably with some libations. Causes vision problems & a case of know it all. Very happy all on AIR BOAT are ok. I hope the rest of their fourth of July is better for them. Bless the good samaritan for rescuing them.

    1. i havent had anything to drink in years..lol as i stated props dont explode. please show me a link or a video or any proof that a prop can by itself explode..lol maybe it was they way it was worded

“According to officials, Darrell Sedilko jr. his 9-year-old daughter and Casandra Miller were traveling in the area of Signal Cove and Hudson Beach when the propeller “exploded.”

and Ive seen people hit rocks out there dislodging the set up on the air boat tearing the haul making a terrible mess and saying omg there was a loud bang and kaboom. but any how glad they are okay.

      1. Just for clarification, the term “exploded” was used by officials in their media release. That is why we placed the term in quotations.

      2. If someone has a composite propeller on a airboat and something (i.e. A drink can, stick, life jacket) or any foreign solid object comes in contact with the prop it can explode

      3. To be clear, any prop can explode.

Not in the sense that you light a fuse and bang, but if you over rev a prop and exceed it’s safe operating RPM, it can and will come apart in a way that is defined as an explosion and send pieces of the prop in many directions.

Once the tip of the prop breaks the sound barrier, it starts to vibrate violently, and when it comes apart, it will destroy anything around it, and people can be killed.

    1. man over board… what kind of wood detonates? in school we would hook pencils to a charger to make them explode but that was the graphite and not the actual wood.
