Battle of Hexam Leads Week 5 Football Action
Football was back in swing last week, with Hernando County teams going 3-2 as Nature Coast beat Central, Springstead and Hernando rolled to open district play, and Weeki Wachee lost to Jacksonville First Coast.
Joining me as always is Derek J. LaRiviere, and we will be breaking down the week five slate, which is headlined by a new intense rivalry: The Battle of Hexam.
Game of the Week: Weeki Wachee (0-3, 0-0 5A-7) @ Central (1-2, 0-1 5A-7) 7:30 p.m.
Aiello Jr: Central, 35-28
LaRiviere: Central, 46-34
Derek’s Breakdown: The Hornets have been able to score points this season, and although the Central defense is improved, there will be plenty of opportunities for Weeki Wachee’s spread offense to move up and down the field. The question is whether or not the defense can slow down De’Vonta Smith, the star Bears tailback. Smith is on his way to another 2,000-yard campaign, and this game could be one of his best statistical performances if the Hornets defense in previous games is any indication. Expect a track meet Friday night
Danny’s Breakdown: Weeki Wachee had a stiff test last week when they welcomed First Coast into town from Jacksonville. The Hornets had a promising start and won the turnover battle 3-0 but found a way to drop the game on the heels of missed opportunities. Central will be led by De’Vonta Smith, and the Bears are looking to avenge a brutal loss on Bright House Networks last week. This is a rivalry game, and records can usually be thrown out the window, but not in this case. Smith is the best player on the field, and it is hard to bet against the team with the best player. Central rides Smith to a close victory.
Byes: Springstead (2-1), Mitchell (2-1), Land O’Lakes (0-3), Seven Rivers Christian (2-2), Zephyrhills Christian (3-1), Bishop McLaughlin (3-1), Lecanto (1-2)
OVERALL RECORDS (LAST WEEK) : Aiello Jr: 10-4 (28-15), LaRiviere 10-4 (30-13)
