SPRING HILL – Earlier this morning RNRF reported the burglary of the U.S. Post Office at Spring Hill Drive and Kass Circle.
There was initial speculation that the burglars used an adjacent business to gain access to the Post Office but after speaking with representatives of both businesses that information was proven not to be the case. A clerk at the liquor store next door said she was told by officials that the thieves climbed on the roof and either cut a hole or found other means of access.
News Channel 8 deployed a drone to view the rooftop and provided RNRF with an image of what appears to be a piece of plywood covering an opening (See below).
While talking with residents at the scene, Mike Foster, an employee with Tito’s Pizza, directed reporters to an area behind his business where several opened envelopes and packages were strewn around. Upon closer inspection, we could clearly see that they were recently opened and dated within the last week. One opened certified letter contained a Western Union check for $50.00. Other boxes were from pharmaceutical companies and may have contained prescription drugs.
We contacted law enforcement who responded and placed the packages into evidence.
We caught up with small business owner Lindsay Cavalier who said she was expecting a check from a client, but when she opened her post office box there was nothing to be found. Cavalier says “I’m not surprised for something like this to happen in this part of town.”
Local officials have not commented and Postal Inspector Doug Smith could not provide many details into the case at this time.

Ugh ? No finger prints taken? Mmmmmm…..
As one of the business owners stated; “I’m not surprised for something like this to happen in this part of town.” Well stated!
hmm what. Lets see how many people handled those letter. The mailer, the original courier, the sorters, the sorters here, and the thieves. Yea prints no problem.Dumb***
They have found another candy store, and they’re all cross the country!
no alarm system no motion detectors no cameras etc etc. might as well of just left the doors unlocked. in the modern era of cheap security the ball was really dropped on a federal operation that has cash and rx meds among other valuables being stored and shipped.
Seriously? And just HOW would you know that? Have YOU been in the back work room of that P.O. ?? Do YOU know this for sure? What makes you so sure there is no alarm or camera’s back there?? WHAT/ WHO gives you the authority to make a statement like that? Umm, sounds very suspicious to me.
BTW, it DOES have an alarm system linked to the US Postal Inspectors office you jerk…why do you think they’re NOT talking. Leave them alone and let them do their jobs, and keep your pathetic uninformed 2 cents to yourself.SMH….
yeah alarm and cameras. mm hmm…all high tech top notch stuff right?.. thats why you have people with power tools on the roof making tons of motion and noise. They came into the post office dropped down. went through things and were in along enough break into stuff and take a decent amount of valuable items.. . fantastic security. the best around right? good thing you can type bc your foot is shoved so far in your mouth talking wouldnt be an option..
Agree Foodforthought , what’s even as wierd, it took the gentleman who owns the pizza place to lead the news people to evidence, humm, seems as tho that whole area would have been walked and evidence gathered , by law enforcement So much for mail order prescrptions, local pharmacy probably safer at this point. Hope Tom keeps us informed on this investigation .Nothing is safe anymore, sad but true.
Yeah, that wasn’t smart of the little Tito man to mess with or handle that stolen mail. Theft of US Mail IS A FELONY, and although he didn’t DO IT, he should have left it alone, called 911 immediately, then called the Spring Hill PO immediately. The manager of the Philatelic station oversees the Plaza station. One call, he would have been there pronto. No one should EVER touch any thing stolen out of a PO, because they could be charged as well. Just sayin…. (retired PO)
you need mens rea and actus reus. basically guilty mind and guilty act to set forth a probable cause affidavit for arrest and have proof of ability opportunity and intent for a conviction. You cant just go around charging people for crimes just because…lol oh wow.. you might be a retired postal delivery worker but you are an arm chair attorney. try learning some basic florida statutes before you sound more ridiculous.. I worked in Pasco as an officer for years before I went into health care. Legal was my favorite to study.
When I was a teen we lived across the road and we would get on the roof over there and set off the alarms for that building. The sheriff would be there sometimes in a minute. We had a huge stupid game in our dumb teen minds. When we would get hit with spot lights we would hop to the back and take the storm drain back to the lake and laugh about it. Im stunned some one did what they did and got away so clean. The longest we were up there was 3 minutes once and a few patrol deputies were there shining lights up top. btw we are talking over 20 years ago when winn dixie was there and the post officer was further east in that plaza. Point is people took their time cutting a hole in the roof dropped in busted into restricted areas of the post office and got away but apparently this madea sister person thinks the security there is the best money can buy..lol maybe some ones been huffing the paint a little too long..
great job HCSO Deputy Andrews and Valor
