Spectators Question Large Near-Ground Explosion During Brooksville Fireworks Display – VIDEO

BROOKSVILLE – Thousands attended last night’s 4th of July celebration at the Hernando County Fairgrounds but an unexpected explosion at ground level caused several spectators to fear the worst.

Dozens of witnesses contacted RNRF after the incident, asking if the explosion caused injuries or damaged property. Jessica Knapp sent in video of the explosion (CLICK HERE TO WATCH) that she says caused spectators to panic and flee the area. Knapp says, “Everyone got out of there so fast I’m shocked no one got ran over, it was hectic.” Jen Owens writes, “Please update asap on the explosion at the fairgrounds. Wondering if Everyone is ok. It was scary!” Amand Ciralsky also questioned the incident and says, “Please tell me you had someone at the fairgrounds! HUGE explosion during fireworks! Sure many people have video. Hope all is okay!” Theresa Farris Roach commented on the Hernando County Fairgrounds Facebook page, stating, “Big fire balls are part of the show? Ok hum not cool. The heat from that could be felt from over by the livestock pen.” Roach goes on to call the response a “cover up.”

According to Fairground officials, the explosion was part of the show and there were no injuries. Brooksville Police also confirmed that there were no reports of injuries or property damage.

  • We set the fireworks at a safe distance. The mechanics over heated at the end from the fireworks finale. No one was close and the fire rescue was on seen and didn’t feel the need to panic because they understood that no one was in harms way. I hope everyone had a great night except for the startle at the end of the show.

    • There was no overheat….the fireworks operator said he “intentionally made that shot” but the rest is correct.

  • I did not see any panic or mass exodus, in fact after the display in question folks seemed to leave the fairgrounds in an orderly fashion and in fact the traffic crawled out of there. According to the guy shooting the fireworks that was some planned shot that he made, but neglected to tell fair officials, police department, fire department or med fleet that he was doing it so everyone was caught off guard. He said that after the tubes were in the ground he put a layer of black powder and then added water and then floated unleaded gasoline on top and ignited the powder to add something spectacular to the grand finale. Don’t think there was any cover up here….just unprepared audience that despite the bit of radiant heat felt was at least 500-700 feet away from where it took place

    • Exactly! We were there and yes, it was scary. We walked over to the fence to make sure that everyone was okay – that was the biggest concern. But all looked well, and people left. End of story.

  • That wasnt a mortar going off low to the ground it remind me of a gas plume effect. Its a canister setup with a bag of gas or other flamable substance that has an explosive charge under it to launch and disperse the liquid so that it burns in a wave of heat and flame. If intentional this is exactly what it would look like but if not this looks like a propane tank or something going off

  • The explanation is a lie, cover up, what ever you want to call it. That was not part of the show.

  • Ice man, does your information make it any SAFER for spectators????

  • Why are people freaking out about this? Does anyone even know what’s inside a firework? One of the mortar or canister tubes probably fell and the firework shot into the ground instead of shooting in the air. Sometimes it happens.
